Water enters automatic waterers in one of three ways: through (A) manually filled tank, (B) float valve-regulated tank, or (C) pressure-regulated direct water supply.

Automatic waterers provide cages with fresh water from nipples or cups.

Metal waterers are sturdier than plastic and come in larger sizes holding 3 gallons (11 l), 5 gallons (19 l), or more. As in all things, you get what you pay for — a cheap metal waterer will rust through faster than a quality drinker. Whether you use plastic or metal, set the container on a level surface so the water won’t drip out. To help birds drink and to reduce litter contamination, set the top edge of the waterer at approximately the height of the birds’ backs.
